Introduction

Who was Hanna Lindh?

In 1886, Hanna Lindh and her family had Pensionat Granparken built above Societetsparken in Norrtälje. The guesthouse became part of the town's emergence as a seaside resort and summer destination. But who was the woman behind it all? And why has her story almost been forgotten?

Hanna's House is the story of a person, a house, and a Norrtälje in transformation.

Hanna Lindh

As Norrtälje rose as a seaside resort, Hanna Lindh built a business that would welcome generations of summer guests.

But her story is about more than a guesthouse. It is about faith, work, family, and a society in change.

Pensionat Granparken

A guesthouse from 1886

Pensionat Granparken was built during Norrtälje's golden age as a spa town. Its position above Societetsparken made the guesthouse a natural part of the bathing guests' lives. The name came from Granparken — the landscaped park where visitors strolled for their health.

New Research

When did the story of Granparken really begin?

Many accounts give 1886 as the starting year. But through a study of contemporary sources, property records, family documents and Ernst Lindh's memoirs, a more complex history emerges. Hanna's House presents new research suggesting the building was raised as early as between 1879 and 1881.

Earlier accounts

1886

The year usually cited for the guesthouse's construction in established descriptions.

What the sources show

1879–81

Memoirs, property records and photographs point to an earlier origin.

What is certain

The Lindh family's connection to the building and its role in Norrtälje's resort life.

What is likely

That Granparken's history can be pushed several years back in time — a genuine historical contribution.

I stood before the guesthouse and tried to separate what I knew from what I had only been told.
